Internet Traffic Modeling, Performance Analysis of Routers & Fitting Procedures-Markovian Approach
Internet Traffic is bursty and self similar [1-2].The long range dependent characteristics of the self-similar traffic severely degrade network performance. Fractal Traffic Models, such as Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM), Fractional Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (FARIMA) etc., although parsimonious are asymptotic in nature. Therefore, they are not suitable traffic models for the queuing based performance analysis when the buffer depth is small. There is an argument that traditional short range dependent (SRD) traffic, such as Markovian arrivals processes (MAPs) could be used to emulate the self-similarity over the desired time-scale [3,4]. Hence self-similar internet traffic input to a router (switch) can be modeled as queuing system with MAP input. Performance measures such as Packet Loss Probability, Mean Waiting Time against Traffic Intensity or Buffer Capacity will be computed. All these performance measures involve steady state probability vector of MAP. Here research problem could be of twofold: First we shall try to fit the self-similar traffic based on second-order statistics of counts using Markovian Models. Second we shall investigate the way of computing steady state vector of Markovian System on lines of matrix geometric solutions. From the mathematics point of view, one has to compute this steady state probability vector using matrix geometric solutions. This is an interdisciplinary research consisting of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics. Expertise from statistics as well as mathematics is indeed.
